Massachusetts/New England Family Resorts

New England Family Resorts-

I need to admit that I am close phobic, and I do not like traveling by plane. Especially, I am afraid of sitting in an airplane with my active toddlers. It is a torture for them, me and my husband. We tried taking them to Midwest to see my in-law, they cried in the air and cried in the land. We tried taking them to Florida to visit the Mickey mouse, they cried in the air and they were too short for most of rides in the amusement park.

I learnt to give them baby Tylenol before boarding, water or juice during take-off. Bringing a lot of toys, DVD for entertainment; playing or walking around non-stoppingly in the terminals. All of them helped and my twins did do much better in flight now. Still, I am worry about germs, air, rental car, people and uncertainty of the flying schedule etc. Visiting family is an obligation, we must do it. But for "real family FUN vacation with young kids", after all, travels by car to nearby resorts became much more enjoyable. They are also less expensive without high price air tickets for four and the cost of rental car.

Here are some nearby resorts in New England area, we can reach them by car easily and we can avoid all the hassle related to flying. The amenities in the resorts are usually fun to the whole family, even to the little ones. Most of them have indoor pools and can be used whole year around. My favor is the Mount Washington Resort due to the incredible scenery and comfy spa. There are some small streams where my twins could have an advanture water tour. Twins' favor is likely to be the CoCoKey water resort because they can splash water and run around half-naked all the time. My husband's favor is the Cape Code Codder Resort, because of the ocean, the food and the sports. Everyone in the family has different tastes. Nevertheless, we still have a lot of fun no matter which one we chose to go.

Sleep or Not with your baby

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns parents not to place their infants to sleep in adult beds. It states that the action puts babies at risk of suffocation and strangulation. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also shares the similar view. On the other hand, over half the world’s population sleeps with their baby. In much of southern Europe, Asia, Africa and Central and South America, mothers and babies routinely share sleep. Special interest groups often influence government policies and consumer behaviors in the U.S., and they always do a good job to get their messages out and get their incentives.

We started with twins slept on their own cribs in their own rooms, but it did not work out for us. Every hour, one of them cried and I would get up to take care of them. David had been protesting the sleep arrangement since he was born. As soon as he opened his eyes or felt lonely, he cried, screamed and waked everyone in the house including his twin brother. The other thing was that he only wanted Mommy, and did not settle for any alternatives. It usually took me half hour to calm him down. Tom was better but he was hungry all the time. Since he had low birth weight, we wanted to pump him up as soon as we could. After one month of NO-co-sleep, both I and my husband were exhausted.

After many discussions and negotiations between me and my husband, we started to remove their cribs next to our bed and had them sleep on the big bed occasionally dependent on their “moods”. We do not do drugs and have never been drunk; the chance we slept on the top of babies, I calculated, is zero. My in-laws might not agree to my decision but they were not sleep deprived.

Sleep deprivation is fairly common for parents with young children but it is even worse for parents of twins or more. Some studies even show that 29-42% of mothers with twins have sleep deprivation and depression. I did not get depression but the lack of sleep and frequent wake-up did contribute to my daily headache. Things were much better after we changed the sleeping arrangement.

The significant benefits from sharing sleep I have witnessed are:
1. Twins sleep better: they do not wake up so frequently anymore.
2. We sleep better: thanks God, I finally got my minimal 4 hours sleep.
3. Breastfeeding is easier: mommy and baby can fall asleep together.
4. Twins are more active at daytime and eat better during the day.
5. We feel so close and so connected with the twins.

It is extremely sweet to snuggle with the little ones.

I initiated the cosleeping due to my exhaustion. My husband reluctantly agreed in the beginning, but I know that he is enjoying the intimate relationship with his sons. We may need to change the sleep arrangement again and encounter difficulties when they are older. But the memory of love will last forever.

There is no right or wrong for baby to sleep with you or not. Wherever all family members sleep the best is the right arrangement for you.

TOP 100 baby boy names from around the world

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Choosing a baby name is one of the most important things Parents decide for their baby. We spent a lot of time to discuss Twins' names. Based on some Twins' books, twins' names should not starts the same letter or they may become too confusing to other people and to themselves. In addition, twins need to develop individuality according to the baby books. Names are certainly parts of their characters. One of my friends was brave enough to name his twins, Xavier and Xara. My mother suggested, Mike and Matt; Tom and Tim. They sound too sketchy. I was more thinking about " Tom" and "Jerry" -like pair names. It is easier for everyone but they would be too funny and the twins may behave like Tom and Jerry later. I was also considering the famous names, such as Abraham vs Benjamin; Theodore vs Lyndon or Dwight vs Woodrow. But I was skeptical that Twins may not like after they learn the origin of their names. We ended up to use common names, Tom and David. They sound clear and friendly.

Even Twins' names sound totally different, however, I still mix up their names occasionally. David would complain if I got his name wrong. But it is very difficult "not" to do that, especially when I try to discipline both of them. It became distraction if they protested over the wrong name, so I started to use " guys" or "gentleman" more to avoid my mistakes. I also try slowdown when each time I need to specify Tom or David for a particular instance. They are different kids and they want their own identity. I shall respect that and get the names correct, but sometime it does not occur the way I would like. I finally understand why public schools always separate twins into different classes. It is not only for the individuality, but for convenience of the teaching staff. Because if I was the teacher, I do not want to be blamed for not paying attention to names of my own students.

Aquarium is an all-year around entertaining center for kids. My kids love the penguins, sharks, sea turtles, gelly-fish, dragon sea horse and pretty much everything there. They can wonder around in the New England aquarium for two hours without any problem. They ask questions such as, why the zebrafish swim in a one direction? Why the sea turtles are not eating the little fish? Why we cannot come here everyday. At the end of each aquarium trip, they may be tired and want to eat something, but they deserve the treats.

Baby Furniture

Most furniture stores offer a checklist for buying for baby which is composed of numerous items. I am not sure if they are really necessary. For example, if you buy a bassinet for your baby, he/she is going to grow out of the bassinet within 3-months. We bought a lot of unnecessary baby stuffs when I was pregnant, it was probably due to my imbalance hormone level. Now I look back, a lot of them were not needed.

First, We bought two convertible crabs for my twins. I thought that it would save money in a long run. The bed can be continuously used when twins grow up. The fact is that the toddlers do not like the regular full size bed. A small, lower, toddler bed would be suitable for them. They are only three, we do not need to worry about the time when they turn to teenagers yet.

Second, it is the changing bed. I think it is really unnecessary and wasts money. I could just change them in the bed or floor where as long as it is flat and safe, so they would not fall or roll over.

Third is the " too many" strollers. We purchased a large double stroller (Graco tour deluxe travel system) to hold the two infant car seats. The seating arrangement is front and back. The stroller was very heavy for me alone to lift it, in addition to handle two infant car seats plus infants inside. However, the stroller moved very well and it was easy to push. Twins grew out of infant car seats after six months. In a year, Tom and David started to fight for the front row seat, so we decided to get a side-by-side stroller to set the dispute. We purchased a double-seat umbrella stroller (Jeep Wrangler Twin sport). It was light for handling but it is too wide for many places. This Jeep stroller was not well-built and it became deformed two months after purchased. And then we got single umbrella stroller for the twins. They were light weight and easy for carrying around, especially, for the travel out of state.

Fourth is " many" milk bottles. We got the 4 oz ones for them because the newborns were small. We also got them the 8 oz for them, because the two 3 months old needed to drink more milk. Now, they are not using the bottles anymore. We got a lot of plastic to be recycled. Maybe, I should just get the 8 oz ones for the beginning.

Five is " the Play yard".

We checked a lot of furniture stores for twins’ cribs in greater Boston area. Some of the retailers have multiple stores in different locations. They offer a lot of selections at different price ranges.

David and Tom spent their first two birthday days with our own family. When they were three, they changed all age daycare to a pre-school child development center. As a result, we got a lot of invitations to other kids' birthday parties. And then my husband and I decided to celebrate their big "THREE" with their little friends. I learnt the party essentials after we took care of 15 little kids and their parents.

1. Book a party place in advance. Most of the popular party places (indoor playgrounds) have booking system, so the parents can plan their party 2 months ahead the time. It is safe to reserve a place 1-2 months in advance, so you will be sure that you have a place for the party. It is much easier to do in other place than that of your home. First, my home cannot hold 15 kids and their parents (total is 40 plus), second, unlike a play center, home is not a good playground for so many children. Third, I do not need to clean after the party. Fourth, I do not need to entertain everybody when there are great things to play.

2. Send invitation in advance. One month advanced notice would be proper. I did not realize the busy life of toddlers until we have two. Their activity and party schedule can fill up the calender. Asking for RSVP is a must, because most of party place has up-limitation or it is head-count based fee service.

3. Party theme. Girls may love to have Princess parties, but boys tend to like Dinosaurs, animals, superhero, Wallie (robot) etc. After you have decided the party theme, you could get all kinds of plates, ultensils, cups, wall papers assocated with the center theme.

4. Food. Birthday cake is essential, but you want something salty as well. So there is a balance between sugars and salts. Juice and water are essential. A personal bag of Chex mix, cheeots, goldfish, and cheeze-it are good.

5. Others. Plates, folks, spoons, napkins are essential. Also KNIFE of course for cutting the cake.

6. Birthday goody bags. You need to prepare extra goody bags in case some siblings are coming along. Small toys, stickers, candies, coloring books are good to go.
