I took a 12-month off to be with my twins. After that, I was afraid that I would not be able to find another job later if I left work force for too long. So I returned to work. These two little guys were sent to a daycare on my way to work. Before we sent them to the daycare, we had tried hiring in-home and local nannies. However none of them worked out for us. The first nanny was from Culture care Au Pair, a fine young lady from Poland. She did not talk too much but she was very friendly. The thing was that she got homesick as soon as she started the job in the US. She wanted to go home 15 days after her arrival. We struggled to find a replacement from the same agency.
The second nanny was from Sweden. She was outgoing and friendly. It only worked out for three days because she preferred to get out of work by 4:00pm on weekdays. I would risk my job if I went home by 3:00pm. We were so disappointed with the au pair agency and decided to find a local nanny by looking at the nanny ads.
The third nanny was a middle age lady who we found her from Craigslist. She seemed mature and responsible in the interviews. There was another young candidate who has her own twins. At the end, we chose the middle age woman because of our impression of her mild temperament and calmness. She seemed to be O.K. for 5 weeks, until one day. She called me at work in the middle of day. She left my home before I got there. The reason was that she was not feeling well. I got very upset and told her not to come back tomorrow.
We continued to search qualified nanny from greataupair.com; nannies4hire.com. We talked to a lot of them; however, no one was really good for our twin boys. After many disappinting conversations and interviews, we decided to send the children to a group daycare center but not a family-run child care. Because I felt, group daycare centers have inherent advantages including: more government regulations, inspection, as well as frequent parents’ visit and peer pressure from other teachers. Those are absolutely requirements for the safety of my children.
Is it hard to hire a good nanny? The answer from me is absolutely, yes. This society needs more reliable and safe care takers for young children.
Twins cried each time during the drop-in and pick-up. It was heartbreaking for me. They simply wanted to be home with me all of the time. The expense for two babies in the daycare is almost equal to our home mortgage. The daycare expense takes a lot from my paycheck, but we will be benefited from the 401K plan. It also provided more security for my family’s life and our mortgage. Hopefully, we can save more money for Twins’ college after we paid off the Daycare expense.
Twins were sick a lot in the first winter with their daycare. My husband and I struggled to take sick days to take care of them. 6-month later, they became more resistant to all the germs and they were not crying so much anymore. Think positively, early exposure of virus does booster their immunity.
When everything started to look good, they started to make friends and got used to the routines. And then one day, I was rushed into the daycare center after I received a phone call from the program director. When I got there, my smaller twin was sitting there, half naked. His face and little arms were swollen badly to the degree that I could not recognize him. He had severe allergic response after the teacher fed him peanut buffer cookies. I picked up both twins and rushed to Hospital. The bigger twin did not know what is going on and felt being left out, so he started to cry. The little one was almost lying still with his eyes closed; he started to cry because his brother was crying. It was my turn to cry because both of them were crying. The medical center gave him Epi-pen and Benadryl; he fell asleep and two hours later, he returned to normal.
They liked their second daycare. One girl named "May" and one boy named "Sturt" were their best buddies. Teachers were very caring and loving. We were very happy for a while.
